Chains and Hard Labor

July 14, 2010

The chain gang reappeared in the South Carolina State Prison system after fading from the scene for decades.  I made this image for Time magazine.

“Considering the mood of the country, perhaps we should not be surprised that chain gangs have been resurrected. To appease a public weary of crime, politicians are looking for any means possible to show that they are tough on crime,” noted Marylee Reynolds in Corrections Today. “Some are delighted by the reappearance of chain gangs. For others, they are emblematic of an era that should remain buried in southern history.”  ©1995 Robin Nelson
